Who am I to write about these things? Keep reading…

Let’s talk about story.

I’m an author with an MFA in fiction and an M.A. in English & creative writing. I’m also a certified book coach and teach writing at the college level. I know story, and I love story. I believe we all have the right to participate in the creation & consumption of story, and we all have a voice.

Let’s talk about writing & coaching.

Here, you’ll find my novels and my coaching services. Stories about belonging alongside services to help writers find their voices and celebrate their storytelling. You’ll find craft advice and thoughts on the literary world.

Let’s talk about revolution.

I believe in justice and freedom for all. In equal, balanced measure. I believe everyone should have their basic needs met and feel safe knowing that justice will be served to any who try to deny them that. I believe we can make this world a better place for more people, but we have to stop flinching at inconvenient stories.

Let’s talk about history.

In addition to writing historical fiction, I have a B.A. in Art history. I’ve always been interested in how the past can inform our present and set up our future. Sometimes looking into the past without attempting to assert presentism is scary, but it’s good and necessary work if we want to move forward.

Let’s talk about creativity.

All humans have the right to be creative. And the creative journey is something we can all share in: the ecstasy of the spark of inspiration, the trials of bringing that inspiration to fruition, the joy of connecting with community when we share our creations, and the personal growth that comes through creating.

Let’s talk about the world today.

Our world is a two-sided coin. We can experience beautiful moments and agonizing moments in equal measure. The human impact on these experiences is something we can all feel through empathy, and it’s our job to speak up to ensure that corruption and fear do not win, over that empathy.

Welcome to The Sensibility Society.

I’m your host, Margaret McNellis.

I write stories about belonging and identity. Regardless of genre or sub-genre, they all come down to those themes, because we all seek to belong somewhere, and we all have the right to do so as human beings.

I help writers craft their stories in spite of imposter syndrome and whatever else may get in their way.

I’m a student of the past, so I can inform the present, and seek to do my part to create a more equitable and empathic world.
